One such safe and effective form of healing is aromatherapy, which uses highly concentrated extracts, plant-based essential oils to mend the mind and body.

The influence of essential oils

Essential oils are distilled from plants, stems, flowers, herbs, roots, and barks of the trees. They are prepared with natural and organic ingredients (only) and work wonderfully well to enhance our overall physical and psychological well-being. These oils have also been revered by the Ayurveda for centuries for their restorative properties.

Furthermore, science has also recognized aromatherapy as a legitimate form of medicine. It claims that inhaling organic essential oils can trigger powerful brain responses and effectively treat mood disorders.

Aromatherapy uses these natural essential oils for triggering responses in the brain that initiate healing of the body. These oils work effectively well to balance out hormone levels, heal digestive disorders, and reduce the symptoms of depression, misery, and stress.

Benefits of essential oils

Aromatherapy essential oils have the potential to heal, energize and awaken love in humans while inviting peace, joy, calmness, and positivity. Some oils can also be used with aroma diffusers or essential oil diffusers in order to address psychological imbalances like stress, depression and anxiety. Here are some related benefits of essential oils:

  1. Ameliorate the mood and set a positive atmosphere

According to health experts, scents are a powerful stimuli that can enter the brain directly and trigger intense emotional responses. They also claim that inhaling organic essential oils (when diffused) allows the brain to signal certain emotions that can make a person feel energized, optimistic and hopeful. It can also set a positive atmosphere and improve the mood of the person.

  1. Relax the mind and ensure a good sleep

Various studies have strengthened the fact that aromatherapy with essential oils is significantly helpful in treating stress, depression and anxiety. In fact, health experts claim that using aromatherapy products can stimulate positive signals in the brain and eliminate negative emotions. It relaxes the mind and ensures a comfortable night’s sleep.

  1. Relieve inflammation

Certain essential oils have anti-inflammatory properties that can be used for reducing itching, irritation and inflammation. One can directly apply the oil on the skin in order to reduce the redness associated with inflammation. Furthermore, some essential oils can also be used for relieving inflammation of the intestine, effects of sinus, and respiratory inflammation.

  1. Prevent illnesses and boost immunity

Apart from anti-inflammatory properties, many ayurvedic essential oils possess anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties as well. According to health experts, these essential oils can help in the prevention of various illnesses like congestion, along with fungal, viral and bacterial infections. Besides, they can also work to improve the immunity system by entering the lungs and getting absorbed into the bloodstream.

Essential oils offer multiple health benefits. Hence, it is important to incorporate them in your lifestyle in order to heal your mind and body in a completely safe and natural way.

Adopt Healthy Ayurveda Lifestyle this Monsoon Season

Refreshing monsoon brings enormous relief from the scorching summer days. However, according to Ayurveda, the rainy season is the worst for our health if we are not careful!

Dosha in the rainy season

Overall, body strength and digestive power are the weakest during the rainy season; therefore, it is essential to take extra precautions during the rainy season to prevent initiation or aggravation of multiple disorders.
Rainy season brings aggravation of vata dosha in the body. Vata dosha is the most powerful of all the three Dosha. If aggravated, it can vitiate all other dosha as well.

Vata dosha and its effect in the rainy seasonDosha and its effect in the rainy season

In the summer season, the body is in a cooling mode. The temperature management system of the body is tuned to excessive sweating and less urination.

However, the rainy season brings an immediate change in the external temperature; this sudden temperature drop can jeopardize body metabolism.

In the summer season, human body lose a lot of essential oils, minerals, and moisture from the body in the form of sweat. This causes a lot of dryness inside the body. Dryness and dehydration are the primary attributes that vitiate the vata dosha. Therefore, according to Ayurveda, summer is the season that results in accumulation of vata dosha in the body.

Digestion is a source of heat for the body. For this reason, in the summer, body tunes down the rate of metabolism and hunger in the body. The low appetite and digestion help to reduce the production of heat inside the body.

With the start of the rainy season, the temperature suddenly cools down, and the body finds itself caught in cold temperature while working while a cooling metabolism (meant for summer climate).

In Charaka Samhita, the rainy season is described as a hot frying pan. First few showers of rain are akin to a sprinkle of water on this hot pan. Therefore, as the water droplets produce a drastic cooling effect that leads to the formation of vapor on the heated frying pan, similarly a severe cooling effect of rains produce metabolic shock in the body tuned to a hot climate.

For this reason, the metabolic transition from summer to the rainy season is the most drastic change for the body. This Sandhikaal or joining of these two Seasons is the time when the body is most susceptible to all kinds of disorders.

Now, as the masters of our bodies, we need to guide them towards a smooth and desirable transition from summer metabolism to rainy season metabolism.

Ayurveda has a most beautiful and elaborate preventive seasonal regiment called ritucharya. In ritucharya, we learn how to manage metabolic changes from one season to another smoothly. Let us look at Varsha Ritucharya and find out how we should eat, live, and behave during the rainy season to preserve our health and reduce the rate of aging.

Varsha Ritucharya

Now Varsha ritucharya includes both contrary food and lifestyle changes as compared to ritucharya in summer. (link to summer blog)

Ayurvedic food for the rainy season

Ayurvedic food for the rainy season

The rainy season is the worst season for digestion. We must take special precautions to ensure balanced digestion. Here are a few points to prevent any imbalances in the digestive system.

These recommendations for food in the rainy season apply to people of all Prakriti or body type.

Before you leap into food recommendations for the rainy season, it is extremely crucial to realize that each person is entirely different and you might have unique requirements.

Therefore while following these recommendations, please be attentive to the requirements of your body.
For example, curd and buttermilk are perfect for consumption in the rainy season; however, if you are not comfortable with eating curd or hate the taste of buttermilk, please skip that.

Ayurvedic food for the rainy season

Honey is one of the indispensable foods for Varsha Ritu. According to Ayurveda, honey is light, cool, dry, and excellent appetizer. Honey reinstates the digestive system weakened in the rainy season. It is antiseptic in nature and protects the body from all kinds of pathogenic infestation during the humid rainy season.

Honey also helps to prevent cough, cold, and flu due to seasonal change in the rainy season.

However, it is crucial never to heat honey. According to Ayurveda, it can denature the proteins and enzymes present in honey and make it toxic for human consumption. In fact, you must ensure that the honey you consume should be raw honey and not pasteurized.

ayurvedic lifestyle for monsoon

During the pasteurization process, a substance is heated to very high temperature and suddenly cooled. This process helps to kill maximum pathogens present inside the respective content. The pasteurization process is used to sterilize milk, honey, and many other products.

The climatic conditions are unstable during the rainy season. For example, one day can be frigid due to continuous rain; however, the other day might be sunny.

During the cold days of the rainy season, you must consume sour, salty, and oily food to ensure the best nutrition for the body and balance aggravated vata dosha.

That is why rainy season in India is closely connected to deep-fried delicacies like pakoda, mangoda, cheela, samosa, aloo vada, and other fried salty savories. I remember my mother cooking crispy Pakoda whenever it rained.

However, it is essential that you should have all oily and heavy food during the daytime and not late in the night.

You must use aged grains during the rainy season Aged grains like old jowar, wheat, and rice are very easy to digest, and they fuel the digestive power as well. Millets might cause digestive problems like bloating, indigestion in some people, therefore, should be used with caution.

You must altogether avoid all kinds of junk food, packaged food, un-natural food like ice cream or cold chilled aerated drinks to preserve proper digestion during the rainy season.

During the meal time, please ensure that the food that you eat is warm and freshly prepared. Avoid drinking water immediately before or after the meal. Even if you have to drink water, make sure that you do not take only a few sips of water.

Sattu mixed with water. Sattu is highly recommended during the summer season; however, it can cause excessive cooling and vata vitiation inside the body in the rainy season, and we do not want that.

You must not consume green leafy vegetables, spinach methi, lal bhaji, etc., for any kind of non-seasonal fruit or vegetable during the rainy season as it can cause severe vata aggravation in the body.

You must also not use vegetables like cabbage cauliflower, lettuce, broccoli, brinjal, green peas, and potato as they can aggravate vata dosha in the body. Lentils or pulses should be used only after tempering with oil or ghee as they also can aggravate vata dosha in the body as well.

You must ensure the use of buttermilk during the rainy season as buttermilk is hot temperament in nature and accelerates the digestive process. You have excellent digestion you can also use curd during cold days cold rainy days. However, you must never use curd in a heated form or during the night.

Ayurvedic lifestyle for the rainy season

Vata dosha can get vitiated in the rainy season with the slightest of provocation, especially in elderly people, vata prakrati people and physically weak and the sick. Therefore, you must make the best use of Ayurvedic Marma therapy, massage, steam treatment, ubtan, and Panchakarma therapy according to your body strength and Prakriti.

The rainy season is a humid season which triggers all kinds of pathogenic growth on the skin surface, especially the delicate skin of the face. Regular facial care with Ubtan face Scrub for all skin can help to remove vulnerable dead skin and prevent all kinds of skin disorders during the rainy season.

If you are a vata prakriti person, regular body massage with sweet almond oil, sesame oil mixed with one-fourth of castor oil, or kushala pain relief body and bath oil can help you ward off all vata-related problems.

If you are a pitta prakriti person then, ideal oil choices for ayurvedic body massage are organic extra virgin coconut oil, sesame oil, and Tej energizing body and bath oil. For all kapha prakriti people, sweet almond oil, sesame oil or Sudyuti skin glowing Ayurvedic oil are the best choices.

We all love getting drenched in the rain. Rainwater today is totally different from what it used to be a few decades back. This rainwater, at times, can be highly acidic in nature, especially in polluted areas. Therefore, please avoid getting drenched, in the first few rains-showers of the season.

Also, make sure that you do not expose yourself to a chilly climate. You must keep yourself warm at night time.

You must not plan to enjoy the cloudy weather by sleeping outdoors in the rainy season. There is no scientific evidence for the following fact. However, according to Ayurveda, sleeping outdoors under a cloudy sky can cause severe vata disorders that can lead to even paralysis.

Fatigue due to any reason can severely vitiate vata dosha; therefore, you must avoid excessive exercise or sexual indulgence as both of these factors aggravate vata dosha.  As the rainwater from the surrounding areas gets absorbed in the rivers, the rivers are highly polluted at this point in time. Contact with this contaminated river water can lead to various skin and digestive disorders.

During the rainy season, sun rays passing through the cloudy sky are not considered to be very beneficial; therefore, you must altogether avoid sunbath during the rainy season.

Sleeping during the daytime can cause excess kapha dosha that can slow down the digestive process. Never sleep during the daytime in the rainy season, unless you are sick or completely exhausted.

Varsha Ritucharya for body pain

The rainy season is notorious for aggravation of all kinds of body pains. We have the perfect remedies for you to control all types of body pain.

Shoulder and neck pain

shoulder and neck pain in monsoon

Sukhata Ayurvedic pain relief oil is an excellent method to get relief from any kind of body pain. It contains much Ayurvedic pain relieving herbs like Karpura, Ajamoda, Bala, Kantakari, Devadaru, etc.

Neck chest shoulder wrap is another product that complements the effects of sukhata oil. It helps in better absorption of all types of topical applications, including massage oils. Neck chest shoulder wrap helps to warm the skin and dilate the blood vessels. It helps in better absorption of massage oil and bring immediate pain relief.

Warmth is a natural contradiction to the coldest vata dosha that causes all kinds of body pain. Therefore, even if you are not able to go for a shoulder, neck, or back massage simply used pain relief wrap, and it will kill the pain with its mild heating effect.

Digestive problems like constipation, bloating, indigestion, etc. are prevalent in the rainy season, particularly in the elderly and vata prakriti people. An Ayurvedic massage with Sukhata pain relief oil and application of pain relief waist stomach wrap can bring immediate relief in case of bloating or stomach ache.

Aggravation of joints pain, especially the knee pain, is quite common in the rainy season. This knee pain can become severe, particularly during the evening time. Mind Ayurvedic massage with sukhata pain relief oil and application of pain relief wrap in the afternoon can bring immediate preventive relief from knee pain for the elderly.

You are suffering from sinusitis or migraine, aggravation of vata dosha in the rainy season can cause a severe increase in the intensity of pain. However, Sushwasa breathe easy diffuser oil helps to remove the kapha induced blockages in the head region and therefore reduces the severity and frequency of sinusitis or migraine attacks.

Cloudy weather can lead to SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) in many people. Lack of proper sunlight can trigger the seasonal affective disorder. SAD has depression as its main symptom.

If you frequently suffer from low moods or mood swings during the rainy season, you must try ayurvedic body massage with Shantam Distressing Ayurvedic Oil. Tej energizing diffuser oil might also be beneficial in alleviating a low mood during the rainy season.

It is essential to note that you must follow diet and lifestyle during the rainy season before you use any of the products mentioned above. According to Ayurveda, if you have proper food, you will never need medicine. However, if you do not have an adequate diet, you will not benefit from any medication.

Therefore for the best benefit from any product, you must ensure that the food and lifestyle are in line with the rainy season. The rainy season is the spring of life. It brings back the lost greenery of the earth. Rains are there to enjoy and not to spend time suffering from indigestion, body pain, or depression.

Hence, follow the above suggestions and enjoy the rainy season to its best.

Your Hair and Care

Ayurveda for excellent hair

Healthy hair and radiant skin are the hallmarks for perfect beauty. I remember the knee length hair of my mother. Such long and healthy hair were not uncommon a few decades back. Today such hair will make everyone’s eyes pop! The way to long and healthy hair goes back to mother nature. Ayurveda, the ancient traditional medicine, contains the secret to beautiful hair.

The first step for Ayurveda treatment is to stop the disease-causing factors (nidana privarjanama – removal of the cause). Let us look at some of the severely debilitating factors for naturally healthy hair growth.

Shampoo or chemical cocktail!

Protect your hair

There is a major flaw in the hair care approach today. It is the outside-in approach of haircare that is ruining the natural beauty of the hair. We try different external remedies for hair. We drown our hair in a cocktail of chemicals in the form of different shampoos, conditioners, gels, lotions, etc.

These so-called “hair-care products” are nothing but a flood of toxin for our hair. The chemicals contained in shampoos are:

  1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

The chemical that creates lather in a shampoo. But this chemical is known to break down proteins, and our hair is nothing but proteins. It also extracts the natural moisture cover from the hair and the scalp, thus leaving it vulnerable to all kinds of infections and irritation. It brings absolutely no benefit to the hair, only tears it apart after a long term use. Are we willing to take this risk only for soapy bubbles!

  2. Parabens

These are preservatives that are used to prevent any microbial growth in shampoos and cosmetics. They have terrible resemblance to human female hormones estrogen. It can create hormonal chaos in the body and lead to many hormonal disorders like breast cancer in female and breast enlargement in males. Here we are talking something much more serious than just hair fall or hair thinning. This chemical is life threatening! Anyone for this shampoo?

  3. Propylene Glycol

A shampoo thickener, does not add any nutrition to the hair as advertised by most companies, This secret chemical takes away all natural oil from our hair making them dull and dry over a period of time.

  4. Diethanolamine (DEA)

One of the many irritants that your shampoo has, no matter which one you choose. This chemical can seriously affect the natural keratin in your hair. It can cause serious scalp inflammation and itchiness, leading to faster hair loss.

  5. Propylene Glycol

A chemical used as a car anti-freeze is used to prevent shampoos from freezing as they are transported from one point to the other, esp in cold climate. Hence, shampoo has more chemicals that can help its manufacturers to generate more profit than benefit the end-user. Whether these chemicals are good for you or not, nobody cares. So now it is time to care yourself for what goes into your hair and whatnot.

  6. Sodium Chloride

We have salt not only in the toothpaste but also in the shampoo and all other hair products. But no company advertises that because it is not good for hair. According to Ayurveda, excessive salt intake causes baldness, early graying and hair thinning. And here we are putting salt directly on our head! The ad should be showing “guaranteed hair fall, up to the extent of baldness very soon!”

  7. Alcohol

Wine is traditionally used to wash and bring luster to the hair. But some strong synthetic alcohols used to preserve the shampoos can be very harmful to hair. Alcohol is an acidic substance and pouring a harsh acid on your hair is going to do nothing but to burn your hair right away. This substance is the culprit behind the frizzy and thinning hair.

Besides, fragrance and colors used in shampoo can contain heavy metals and other cancer-causing chemicals. Artificial colors used in shampoos are derived from petroleum and coal tar and can be highly carcinogenic.

The other hazardous chemicals found in shampoos much longer Quaternium-15, formaldehyde, Imidazolidinyl Urea (imagine putting urea in your hair for better hair growth), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Triclosan, Retinyl Palmitate, etc.

All of these chemicals have a severely degenerative effect on hair growth. These chemicals might lead to temporary shine and free-flowing hair, but they cause great harm to the hair in the long term. The result is hair loss, dandruff, scalp skin disorders, baldness and so on.

After reading this, it would be amply clear to everyone why this generation does not have the kind of hair that our grannies had!

Therefore the first step towards growing a dense mass of healthy and lustrous hair is to abandon all these toxic products. We get fooled into believing that these unnatural products can bring great looks and health to our hair in a short span. In short, all the shampoos and other hair products are like the wolf in the story of the red riding hood. They gain your trust and confidence; strip you of your hard-earned money and the hair as well.

Real Hair Care Tips

There are 2 fields of any disease according to Ayurveda – the mind and the body. In the case of hair, the mind is the more powerful factor.

Mind your hair

Treat your hair

Healthy hair is an incidental result of healthy food, lifestyle and peaceful state of mind. If someone were to ask me, an Ayurveda physician the best remedy for great hair, I would say there is one ultimate remedy – a peaceful and happy mind. With a peaceful mind, your hair will remain long, dark and shiny till the time you get to play with your grandchildren. If you do not have a peaceful mind, no remedy will have a permanent effect, no matter how effective it might be otherwise.

Therefore, meditation/ religious faith is one single factor that can turn all other factors in your favor. If you have a peaceful mind, your hair will survive the bad climate, less amount of food, rugged lifestyle and everything else. It is important to understand that a peaceful mind is different from a happy mind. You are tempted to eat junk food and might feel happy after eating it. But, this is a temporary pleasure and cannot be equated with a feeling of contentment.

Meditation will not only give you healthy hair, but it will also bestow you with overall great health, strength, stamina, great focus, patience, and flexibility in life. It is a complete cure for every problem of life. A must try for sincere hair patrons!

Yoga and pranayama also have a great effect on hair health. The bottom line is – whatever keeps your mind peaceful, is good for your hair!

Protect your hair

Nourish your hair

First thing first, The first treatment in Ayurveda is the elimination of the factors that cause Hair problems. Following are some of the lifestyle factors that can cause severe and long term damage to the hair. These factors impair the digestion leading to accumulation of toxins in the body. These toxins get excreted via the hair. Thus bad, thin and malnourished hair is the result there is a simple sutra that you can follow as the first step towards beautiful hair.

Avoid the following

Mahatapa, The stress, anxiety, negativity – Stress and related negative emotions can severely damage the hair.

Ama, undigested food-based toxins – Eat only when you are hungry; exercise regularly to maintain proper digestion.

Vegavidharan- Your habitual suppression of natural urges) – It leads to vitiation of vata and rapid hair fall.

Raja, The dust – Dust gets deposited on the scalp and blocks the glands in the scalp skin. Thus the nutrition and protection of the outer layer are hindered.

Dhoom, The smoke – The heat and soot from smoke have a similar effect as dust on the hair.

Aatap, The excess heat & harsh sunlight – excess heat can damage the hair follicles and lead to early graying. From here comes the adage – “Dhoop me baal safed karna” (to whiten the hair in sunlight), and you don’t want that!

Hima, The cold – excess exposure to cold can constrict the blood vessels in the scalp and prevent adequate blood supply to the hair follicles.

Sheetambusevan, The the use of cold water – cold water is extremely hazardous, especially for the vata and kapha prakrati. However, room temperature water in summer, spring and rainy season do not come under this definition.

Prakvata, The facing headwinds – We all love free-flowing hair, but I would suggest that you don’t let your hair flow. Wind can make hair and scalp extremely dry and lead to rapid hair fall. Well tied hair (in a bun or braid) is safe from the wind. Also, if you can cover your head when outside, God will bless you with beautiful locks.

Divaswap, Day sleep – This factor vitiates Kapha dosha and creates obstructions in the hair metabolism channels.

Prajagran, The lack of sleep – It leads to vata vitiation and thus rapid hair fall. It can even lead to baldness in the long run.

Madya, Intoxication – excessive use of alcohol vitiates pitta and leads to inflammation in the hair follicles.

few causes that affect hair health:

  • Hormonal
  • Complications to other diseases
  • Medications

These factors can be controlled only when the primary disorder is corrected.

Nourish your hair

protect your hair

Let’s balance our mind and look at the second factor important for perfect hair health – the food. Food is real medicine according to Ayurveda. If you have good food, you will never need any medicine. And if you have the wrong food, no medication will be able to cure you. Hair comes at the end of the metabolic priorities. Therefore it is crucial that we consume enough nutrition so that it reaches the end of the metabolic chain – to the hair.

But there is a much important factor than the diet. Digestion is the ultimate deciding factor whether we will have enough nutrition absorbed in our body or not. If we have a weak or vitiated digestive system, then we might not be able to digest no matter how much nutrition we consume. It is important to have easily digestible, less oily, less spicy food daily. According to Acharya Charak, you must consume rice, moong dal, rock salt, jowar, milk, ghee, and honey daily.

Lifestyle for Different Hair Types:

General Lifestyle for the perfect hair Here are some guidelines that apply to all prakrati or type of people and an universal must for good hair
  • Have good food on time, Regular meals help the body in better maintenance and planning.
  • Avoid mid-meal snacks. Mid-meal snacks tax the digestive system and retard the overall digestive capacity.
  • Avoid drinking a large amount of water immediately before, during or immediately after a meal. This water consumption decreases the optimal temperature for digestion and dilutes the digestive enzyme. It diminishes the overall quality of digestion.
  • Avoid sleeping immediately after a meal. Walk up to 100 steps after dinner. This walking is a traditional practice called shatpavli. It helps to accelerate the rate of digestion at night time.
  • Avoid late night dinners altogether. If you are hungry, go for a glass of milk.
  • Exercise daily to ensure better blood supply to your brain and your hair.
  • Practice weekly Champi (head massage) and let the oil stay overnight for best results.

Vata – Hair Food and Lifestyle

Vata is the dosha responsible for most hair problems like hair fall (khalitya), dry scalp, dandruff (darunak), baldness (Indralupta), etc. Therefore, Ayurveda recommends that you must avoid vata vitiating food, especially in the rainy season. Rainy season affects maximum hair fall for most of the people. You might attribute this hair fall to the rainwater or the changing climate. But the real culprit behind this sudden hair fall is the consumption of green vegetables.

According to Ayurveda, rain is the time for cyclic natural vata vitiatio n, and green vegetables are a natural vitiating agent for vata. Thus eating green vegetables in rainy season is the deadly combination that can lead to rapid hair fall. Vata people should undergo panchkarma (basti) treatment before the beginning of this season to avoid all the problems by natural vata vitiation.

Besides, vata prakrati people should avoid frequent consumption of vata causing vegetables like brinjal, green peas, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce except in the winter season

Vata Hair and Care

Vataprakrati people should use warm temperament hair oils for head massage.

Castor oil and almond oil are the best for Vata Prakrati people. These oils are warm in temperament and have a natural hydrating effect on the dry and cold vata scalp.

Ideally, these oils should be warmed to a comfortable temperature and applied at night. The night is a good time as the oil can sit overnight and have better absorption in the scalp skin. Vata scalp is the most prone to dandruff.

Recently i discovered Sukeshant Anti Dandruff Ayurvedic Hair Oil, one of the best remedies for dandruff. The word Sukeshant means “the one having beautiful locks.” This oil nourish not only vata prakrati hair but all types of hair.

Avoid washing the hair with chemical based shampoos after the head massage. In the morning, you can try washing hair with chemical-free hydrating herbal shampoo for dry hair. Vata hair has a tendency to get frizzy and tangled very easily. condition your hair with Chemical free Gentle Conditioner for dry hair which can help you prevent the damage by reducing the fizziness of the hair.

Nourishing conditioner for dry hair is especially suitable for excessively dry hair. The moisturizing effect of aloe vera, neuroprotective effect of Jatamansi and nutrition by Geranium is one of the most desirable combinations for dry vata hair. If you have too much dandruff, try using Soothing Anti Dandruff Conditioner for scalp irritation and infection in the dry vata skin. The excellent combination of tea tree oil, neem, Sweet Almond, Jojoba, Babassu and Shea can prevent all kinds of skin infections, itching, and irritation of a vata skin.

Pitta Prakrati hair care

Hair of pitta prakrati people are prone to early greying (palitya), and a low rate of growth. Vitiated pitta dosha can cause scalp inflammation. Excess heat of pitta can burn the hair follicle and cause slow hair growth. Coolness inducing and moist food is the best remedy for healthy hair in pitta people.

Pitta Hair Food and Lifestyle

Pitta prakrati people should avoid excess sunlight, heat, and humidity if possible. To keep their head and hair safe from vitiation of pitta, they should consume cooling beverages like coconut water, coriander squash, Brahmi sherbet, etc.

Pitta prakrati people must take special care of their skin and hair during the early winter (Sharad) season. Sharad is the time when a natural rhythmic imbalance of pitta occurs. At this time pitta prakrati people can face rapid whitening of hair, skin inflammation, hyperacidity, and other pitta related problems.

Ideally, pitta prakrati people should undergo a regular detox or panchakarma before this period of the year. Pitta Prakriti people must avoid oily, hot, and spicy food. They should try to consume more of cooling and pitta pacifying food like ghee, milk, turmeric, mulethi (Liquorice), Elaichi (green cardamom), moong dal (green gram), rice. They should avoid consuming excess lemon, tamarind, vinegar, soya sauce, red chili, garam masala, sour curd, etc. In short, they should avoid excessive sour and bitter food. Sweet and coolness inducing food are the best for them.

Pitta hair care

Pitta prakrati people must avoid hot water or steam treatment for their hair. Virgin coconut oil is one of the best choices for pitta prakrati hair. Coconut cools and purifies the blood supply to the brain. It naturally nourishes the scalp and the hair follicles.

A combination of sesame, Vetiver (khus) roots and Bringaraj is the choicest solution for premature hair greying and scalp irritation (KeshinThailam Hair Growth Oil). Sesame cools off the pitta scalp and removes irritation if any. Vetiver (khus) is known for its cooling and blood purifying properties, essential for pitta prakrati people. Bringaraj is a natural hair colourant. It also helps to enhance the hair density.

Some pitta people might be prone to baldness due to a combined effect of vata and pitta, and excessive anger (a characteristic of pitta prakrati people). Pushtikar Hair Oil for Hair Loss might be a great help to prevent the early onset of baldness. Hibiscus Brahmi mask is an excellent remedy for hot-headed pitta prakrati people. Brahmi helps to cool the scalp skin, relax scalp nerves and nourish the hair.

Do not warm any oil before use on the head. It is crucial that the oil for head massage of pitta prakrati people should be used at room temperature unless advised by an Ayurveda physician.

Kapha Prakrati : Food and Lifestyle

Kapha prakrati people are blessed with the best quality of hair among all other prakrati people. They naturally have soft, smooth, lustrous and thick hair. However, they have a sluggish metabolism. Their digestion can be prolonged and can lead to toxin accumulation in the body. Besides, the slow blood supply to the head can lead to bad hair health, hair fall and other problems.

It is vital that kapha prakrati people should eat light and hot meals. They should not eat after the sunset avoid ice-cream, cold drinks, sweets, sour & salty foods. Must include more digestive herbs like ginger, garlic, clove, black cardamom, garam masala, bay leafs.

Vasant (spring) is the phase of natural cyclic vitiation of Kapha in the human body. Kaphaprakrati people should try to observe fast during this time. According to Hindu tradition, Chaitra Nav-Ratri fasting is a very healthy ritual for all kapha prakrati people. They can also go for panchkarma before this season begins.

Sweet almond oil is the right choice for Kapha hair facing hair thinning or numbness in the scalp. Sukeshant Anti Dandruff Ayurvedic Hair Oil is the most appropriate choice for dandruff or scalp irritation in kapha prakrati skin. Kapha skin is prone to skin infections due to the low rate of metabolism. The low dose of Dhatura can invigorate nerve ending in the scalp. Durva and Daru haridhra are excellent blood purifiers. Guduchi helps to fight skin infections like a fungal infection, eczema, etc.

Marma massage with Omved Hair oils can lead to incredible results, especially for the kapha prakarti people.

Note: Always rinse your hair properly and towel dry your wet hair and use toothed comb instead of blower or hot dry.

Can we use Pampers or Diapers for new born?

using diapers for your baby

The advent of working moms has led to rapid changes in baby care in the past few decades. I remember my Nani telling my aunts to use nappies instead of diapers. She would say “bachche ko hawa lagegi” (the child will get some air).

Back then the focus was on the child and not on our comfort. However, acute consumerism has turned child-rearing more towards caretaker’s comfort and away from the child itself!

Earlier moms majorly used clothes based nappies for their babies. Even the early diapers were made by stuffing clothes with cotton. However, today the diapers are made with a combination of water-absorbent polymer and plastic.

The major objection about a baby wearing diaper might be that the baby might get a rash. But for that, we have diaper rash creams. So why worry about curable minor skin problem.

Most of the parents think this way. If you are one of them, you must research more about the toxic chemicals, used as common ingredients in all diapers. They are present even in the “environment-friendly” ones.

In developed countries like the US, diaper companies do not need to reveal the raw materials. They also do not require testing or proof for the safety of the ingredients used.

We would all be in dark unless for some independent testing which revealed shocking facts. Let’s have a look at them –

The outer lining of the diaper is made from a polyethylene wrap. The inner lining which is in constant touch with the baby’s skin and its genitals is made from polypropylene.

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer that has incredible water absorbing capacity. This plastic is known to raise the rate of allergic reactions in people who already have some allergies. This might explain the rise in incidents of allergies in babies wearing diapers.

Polypropylene can disrupt the function of endocrinal glands and cause a hormonal disturbance. It has the potential to mimic the female hormone Estrogen. It can cause serious problems in baby girls as they grow up with diapers.

Polypropylene can disrupt the early development of the male genitals in baby boys. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3222987/

Polypropylene can leach hazardous metals to any substance in close contact. Sensitive and vulnerable baby skins are at risk of continuous exposure to hazardous chemicals with the use of disposable diapers. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11356-011-0663-5

What’s worse, in one recent research, polypropylene has shown to have carcinogenic effects on animals. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00192-013-2239-z.
Long term research on humans is suggested. It can also cause genetic mutation in living organisms.

Please find following research blogs that will help you explore more about polypropylene

Polypropylene is just a single element from the bouquet of chemicals that are present in disposable diapers.

Sodium Polyacrylate(SPA) is a chemical added to all the diapers, even the “eco-friendly diapers. It is a super absorbent that helps to retain the fluid inside the diaper. This is a powder that turns into gel after absorbing water. You can find it sticking to baby’s genitals sometimes.

It can trigger allergic reactions and severe skin problems in babies. It can also induce fever, vomiting and skin irritation. A scientific study done on mice suggests that SPA can cause hemorrhage, cardiovascular failure, and death of the subject.
SPA was also used in tampons, a menstrual cup introduced in the US. Tampons led to the death of several women in 1985. SPA was banned because of inducing Toxic shock syndrome(TSS) in the users of tampons.

SPA absorbs the fluid but it does nothing to stop the microbial growth in the absorbed urine. In this way, your baby is actually sitting on a dry incubation center of pathogens. Unfortunately, sometimes parents use diapers overnight or throughout the day without changing them.

Ideally, any material that is soiled by urine or fecal matter should be removed asap. Unfortunately, a baby wearing diapers does not sound the alarm after peeing because the fluid is completely absorbed by SPA. This dry comfort hinders the immediate removal of the contaminated diaper from the baby. If we are using diapers with SPA, we are trading baby’s health with our comfort!

Worst can happen if baby ingests even a small amount of SPA. Recently 5 children reported killed after ingesting less than 5 gm of SPA accidentally.

Phthalates are another variety of chemicals, present in almost all kinds of baby diapers. They are softening agents for plastics. Phthalates are banned from children products like toys, teething rings, etc. because of instances of toxicity.

Phthalates also exhibit effects similar to human hormones and mimic the action of human hormones. These chemicals are capable of sending false signals to the body and create metabolic disruption. They can leach through and diapers and come in contact with the baby’s sensitive skin.

Now phthalates can have a huge negative impact on the overall development of the baby- physical as well as mental. They can trigger ADHD, Low IQ, behavioral issues, autism, etc. Phthalates are also linked to serious disorders like asthma, breast cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and male infertility.
looking at the above information, diapers should be an absolute no-no for any responsible parent.

The Story doesn’t end with the phthalates, there is more to the diapers based chemical list. The paper used in manufacturing diapers is bleached, producing a bye-products called dioxins. Now dioxins are carcinogenic, and not the mild ones. Actually, they are the most dangerous of all the cancer-causing chemical according to EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).
Dioxins can cause a lot of other disorders like skin and liver disorders and birth defects. It can also lead to genetic damage and severe immune suppression. Avoiding diapers completely can help save your baby from exposure to these fatal chemicals.
Heavy metals

Next, in the list of lethal diaper ingredients are the heavy metals like Tributyl Tin (TBT) and others. TBT can cause severe damage to the hormonal and immune system. It can even cause sterility in males even in tiniest amounts. What’ worse, TBT can slowly seep into the skin by constant exposure to the skin and produce a hormone-like effect.

Dyes used in baby diapers contain many other heavy metals and cause severe skin disorder, now called Diaper Dye dermatitis. https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/116/3/e450.full?sid=a13491bc-4318-4181-940b-d3d406ec7427
Thus, wearing diapers is actually very expensive in the long run!!

Other Diaper toxins

You will be surprised to know that we have hardly covered 30% of toxic elements above. There is a long list of poisonous chemicals found in diaper emissions. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10501153

2002 pediatric study found that most of the diapers emit chemicals, harmful to the respiratory system and can cause severe asthma. Please find a list of nasties that a diaper contains –

Methyl cinnamate
P-tert-butyl-phenol-formaldehyde resin

In short, all of these chemicals have a very dangerous effect on the human body. Here we are talking about a sensitive small baby being bombarded with all of these chemicals right from the birth.

A conscious parent would use diapers after knowing all these facts and how the diaper industry is trying to hide them.

Male Infertility

Diapers can cause long term problems for male babies. The scrotum undergoes major developments after the baby is born. However, the high temperature inside a diaper can hamper this natural development. This results in infertility, low sperm count and other reproductive problems in the future.

Environmental damage

environmental language

Diapers are hazardous not only for your baby; they are dangerous for the environment too. One diaper can take 500 years to decompose properly. In the process, it will emit the traces of all the above toxic chemicals in the environment. Therefore, a diaper is nothing more than a poison bag in our landfills and seas.

Many chemicals like dioxins are classified as persistent organic pollutants(POPs). This category of pollutants is resistant to degradation. This means that they are here to stay forever! They just keep passing from one organism to the other.

As the soiled diapers take centuries to decay, they can host continuous germ incubation till the time they are around. Diapers in the landfills significantly increase the risk of pathogenic contamination of the groundwater.

What we will leave behind as a legacy? A big pile of toxic diapers! not only for our current generation but also for our grand and great-grandchildren!

Besides, disposable diapers are expensive, very expensive for the babies, for the parents and for the planet. So why to waste resources in something useless but expensive. Let’s go for a natural option with priceless benefits.

Nappy Pads: Natural Alternative to Diapers

Now, there is an age-old solution to the diaper – nappy pads. They have been used for generations and have zero negative effect on the baby and the environment. Young parents fear the nappy pads generally. But the benefits of nappy pads for both the baby and the parent, are beyond comparison.

There are some real-time benefits that both the parent and child receive when they are using nappy pads.

Low risk of skin infections

you need to immediately remove A soiled nappy pad due to immediate discomfort to the child. This immediate removal of the soiled nappy pads is a great way to prevent any infection to the baby.

Nappy pads never cause rashes or any other form of skin infection. Rare cases of infections can occur only when the baby is allergic to the cloth used for making the pads. The chances of a nappy baby developing rashes are 90-95% lower than a diaper baby.

Early Potty Training

potty training

Babies do not like to be wet at all! They have a tremendous capacity to learn and accommodate to the changing situations. Babies who do not use diapers get more exposure to the wetting experience. Their brain tries to find a solution to the wetting problem.

Thus, if you use nappy pads instead of diapers, your baby will be self-motivated and ready for potty training. Thus, the use of nappy pads can facilitate early potty training in infants.

Elimination Communication

Newborn Baby Massage

A few decades back, Indian mothers heavily relied on Elimination communication (EC). A Mother is naturally sensitive to the baby’s subtle gestures. She can quickly learn to differentiate between the cues for hunger, sleep as well as the need to defecate.

This practice can actually help to eliminate the need for diapers at all. Mothers should hold babies over the potty, whenever they need to. Thus a parent can very successfully potty train even a one-year-old baby.

Effective elimination communication between the mom and child can reduce the use of even the nappy pads. Even a single nappy pad might last the whole day. Thus, the horror of washing soiled nappy pads whole day is nothing but a myth.

Nappy pads are reusable. Therefore, a dozen nappy pads can take care of the baby until the time he is potty trained. In this way, we as individuals can prevent the huge amount of toxins going to our landfills, seas and underground water. We can also help to save the precious natural resources, time and effort in making this dangerous product.

Great for your pocket

Every experienced mom knows that the most expensive product in child-rearing is a diaper. Considering all the potential damages that can be caused by a diaper, is it worth spending anything at all on them? The money thus saved can be spent usefully to buy organic baby food or non-plastic toys (they are terribly expensive)!

Everyone wants the best for their baby even if it requires an extra effort. So why not go for the best natural solution available – nappy pads.

Cotton is the best fabric to make nappy pads. However, it is imperative to use a high-quality nappy pad. Any parent planning to use cotton nappy pads must become aware of the damage BT cotton can cause to your baby.

BT Cotton

BT cotton is high yielding GM variety of cotton. This variety produces toxins that kills a pest – bollworm.

BT cotton can trigger a variety of skin disorders in humans. There is a possibility of triggering multiple skin disorders like dermatitis, vitiligo, psoriasis, eczema, etc. with the use of BT cotton.

BT cotton is highly toxic for all organisms. It’s toxic effect lead to over-night death of cattle that were fed leftover BT cotton plants after the harvest. This incident occurred in many Indian states.

The huge amount of pesticides lingers in the cloth for a long time. Cotton processing includes the use of formaldehyde, triclosan, and pre-fluorinated chemicals. There are an enormous variety and amount of chemicals that might be present in an innocent looking cotton nappy pad.

Bt cotton is not great for the planet. As a genetically modified organism, BT cotton requires big doses of pesticides, fertilizers, etc. At the same time, it also depletes a huge amount of groundwater. Frequent harvest of BT cotton can render the soil completely infertile over a few years.

India’s ancient Secret of Newborn Baby Massage

Baby massage is an ancient tradition in Ayurveda, a traditional Indian medicine. The culture of massage was so developed in the Vedic times, that there was a specialized profession for massage therapists, called “Nai”.

According to Ayurveda, infant massage routine is an absolute must for the healthy development of babies especially premature & preterm infants.

Why Infant massage is important?

Psychological benefits: Ayurveda says that there is 2 dimension of the human existence – Mind and the Body. Out of these two, mind is the most important one. In fact, the mind is the real existence; the body is a mere shadow of the mental state. Touch and smell are the two only sense that is fully developed in infants.

These two sensations frame the world around them. In order to stimulate an infant’s mind & feel good, touch and smell are the only 2 routes.

According to modern child psychology, the first 6 months of life are most important for mental development and superior bond with your baby. This is the time when a baby decides whether the world is a safe place for him or not.

Therefore it is advised never to shout or be angry in front of an infant. Baby massage is an excellent method to welcome a new-born. Soft soothing touch of an experienced masseur can provide the infant with the reassurance of safety in the new environment.

Massage or even soothing touch of a mother/parent can stimulate the rapid development of the cognitive ability in babies. Some of the incredible results are early speaking ability, better recognition of facial emotions and emotional response rate.

Physical benefits of massaging your newborn: There are tremendous physical benefits of infant massage. Massage affects all the 3 doshas in the body.

 Secret of Newborn Baby Massage

Vata controls the development of the nervous system and the muscles primarily in the body. It also controls the formation of the blood vessels and baby heart rate. With massage, all these developments get a boost in the following manner. Because of the good development of good circulation system, there is better transportation of nutrients and better waste removal through blood. The baby who receives regular massage will develop weight gain, improve circulatory system, especially premature baby.

This will help him to avert multiple diseases in later years, like varicose veins, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia, etc.
Better circulation and the pressing action of massage therapy results in faster development of muscles. The muscles of the baby are better formed and stronger as compared to the babies who do not receive any massage.

Baby massage leads to better nervous development and improved coordination between the sensory and motor response system, help them fall asleep better.

As a natural result of stronger muscles and better nervous system, babies tend to grow much faster and without any troubles. For example,  babies subjected to regular massage tend to walk better and faster as compared to their counterparts with no massage.

Pitta controls the digestive process. Massage helps better circulation and boost the digestive system to digest the food better. It also helps to avoid bloating, intestinal cramps and stomach pain, which is a common problem in the babies.

Pitta dosha is also the controlling factor of all kinds of skin related problems. Massage helps to declog the secretory glands in the skin like the sweat glands and the sebaceous glands. These glands are the lifeline of healthy and radiant skin. Massage also stimulates the blood circulation and therefore there is a faster supply of nutrition to the farthest layer of skin. This naturally keeps the skin of the babies nice and supple. In the long term, massage can ensure a permanently smooth and glowing skin.

Kapha is the disease-causing factor in babies as childhood is the Kapha dominated phase of life. Here cough, cold and respiratory problems are the most common ones. Massage helps to balance Kapha and relieve the babies of cough, colds and all the mucus related problems. It helps the babies to drain the mucus from the respiratory system.

Sleep is a function of Kapha, however good sleep is a result of a balance of all the 3 doshas. Massage relax & relieves the muscles of the lactic acid and balances Vata dosha that makes babies hyperactive at night.

Choosing the right Baby Massage Oil

baby massage

Every child has a different body type, and therefore a different skin type. Therefore, there should be different massage oil for every baby. There are 3 main types of Prakriti or Ayurvedic body types– Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Accordingly, there are 3 main types of skins. General knowledge about the type of baby oil one should use is available but little awareness of the type of skin the child has. The choice of baby massage oil should be ideally based on the type of skin and its distinct requirements.

Identifying Vata Skin in New Born: This type of skin has a great natural tendency towards dryness. And therefore it is more prone to skin disorders related to itching. The best massage oil for Vata skin type is

1. Organic Sesame oil is warm in temperament and helps to pacify both Vata and Kapha. It is the most beneficial oil according to Ayurveda for all health purposes. It is mild in nature and enhances the natural glow of the infant’s body.

Sesame oil also increases the muscular and nervous strength of the baby. Sesame oil has tremendous healing properties according to Ayurveda. Traditionally, it was used for relief from ear-ache, headache, burns, boils, abscess, or any other kind of topical injury. Baby massage with sesame oil ensures that the vulnerable skin of the baby is completely protected.

So, in case your baby suffers from frequent colics or intestinal cramps, massage with castor oil is the best option.

Sweet almond oil is esp. good for the development of nerves in the infant’s body. It strengthens the overall nervous systems and enhances the rate of sensory reception and motor response in the baby. Therefore, almond oil is said to be excellent for overall brain development, which is crucial for all babies to achieve!almond oil for baby massage

Pitta Skin: This type of skin is prone to inflammation and all kinds of inflammatory disorders. Skin is the abode of pitta dosha. Therefore almost all kinds of skin disorders can easily erupt in a pitta dominated skin. This kind of skin needs cooling treatment on a daily basis.

1. Shishu Thailam: This is the best oil for Pitta dominant Prakriti and skin type. Extra Virgin Coconut oil, the primary ingredient of Shishu Thailam, is cool in temperament. It is one of the best ingredients to prevent and pacify all kinds of pitta related disorders. Ashwagandha is an excellent nervine tonic. Manjishtha is one of the best blood purifiers.

Most of the pitta related problems happen because of blood impurities. Here Manjishtha is a great preventive herb. Khas is one of the best ingredients and a cooling herb that soothes all kinds of inflammatory responses of the body.

Best massage oil for baby

  1. Organic Extra Virgin Coconut oil: As mentioned above, coconut oil is one of the best oils for all pitta related problems. It keeps the pitta dominant skin cool. It also prevents rashes, boils, redness and swelling in the skin. It is also a very good oil for any kind of itching in the body. The soothing aroma of coconut helps the pitta dominant baby to keep cool and relaxed.

Kapha skin: Kapha skin type is more prone to numbness. However, it is the healthiest skin type that requires the least care in any condition or season. Still, it does require some effort in the development of the nervous system and muscles. Kapha skin type is prone to a sluggish metabolism. Massage with warm oils can stimulate the rate of metabolism in a Kapha dominant baby and ensure rapid overall development.

  1. Organic Castor oil:  This oil acts fast and helps to accelerate blood supply in the Kapha dominant baby. It helps to ensure that the kapha skin gets adequate blood supply and nutrition. Kapha dominant babies are prone to low heat production in the body. Castor oil also prevents cold extremities in the Kapha dominant baby, that might lead to frequent flu and other seasonal disorders.
  2. Organic Sweet almond oil: Being warm in temperament, it helps to ward off the hypoactivity of kapha skin. Almond oil helps to expand the blood vessels and ensures proper distribution of heat to the outer layers of the skin. Also, it is mild in nature. As mentioned above, it is excellent for overall nervous development.
  3. Organic Sesame oil: It is an oil that can be universally used because of its balancing effect on all the 3 dosha.

How to massage your baby using oils?

newborn baby massage

It is important to know suitable oil for your baby’s skin. Apply a small quantity of oil one night before on the toes of infant and leave it overnight. If there is no reaction, it means that the oil is compatible with the infant’s skin. Follow the steps by steps as mentioned below

  1. Warm the massage oil to a lukewarm and comfortable temperature. Warm oil has a better absorption rate as compared to the normal temperature oil. Warm oil is especially soothing in winter.
  2. hold your baby & start message with limbs – first baby legs, then hands. Apply the oil generously on the infant’s body. It is better to pour oil on the infant’s body rather than on masseurs hands. It helps to maximize the utilization of massage oil.
  3. Gently massage the sole/palm, toes and fingers. It is very important as sole/palm, toes and fingers contain a lot of acupressure points. Regular gentle massage can help to stimulate the nervous and hormonal system of the body.
  4. Massage the limbs by slightly stretching them outwards and away from the body. This helps to strengthen the joints of the limbs.
  5. After limbs, gently massage the chest and stomach in a circular motion. Then massage by moving hands from the top towards the bottom of the abdomen. Avoid too much pressure on the lower abdominal region, below the spinal cage.
  6. After the frontal massage, massage the back in a similar motion as applied to the front chest region. Gently press the lowest rib near the buttocks for a few seconds. This helps to relax the entire spine.
  7. The face should be massaged very gently in circular motion. Make sure to avoid using too much oil in f
  8. ace massage so that it does not irritate the eyes. Gently massage the head. Newborn Baby Massage

Please Note: Avoid putting pressure on the mid-region of the head, as infants have unfused bones in this region. Even a small amount of pressure can hurt the infant’s brain.

Let the oil sit on the infant’s body for 5-10 min. It will help the oil to get properly absorbed. If possible, allow a few minutes of sunbath after the baby massage. It is highly recommended to have mild sunbath after infant massage. Early morning sunrays are the best for this purpose.

Most of the infants tend to develop neonatal jaundice, which is a major problem with the infants. In this disorder, the infant’s liver can be severely affected. Early morning sunbath and massage can moderate the high bilirubin levels in the infant’s blood and successfully prevent neonatal jaundice. Massage helps better absorption of the sunrays and enhance the overall immunity towards this serious skin disorder in newborn.

Excess oil can be wiped away by using cotton cloth before the bath. During winters bath with warm water helps to remove any excess oil left on the infant’s body. In the summertime, try to bath the infant in normal temperature water.

Precautions: It is important that the room is warm and massage should be gentle initially and adjusted to an infant’s capacity. Some babies naturally like heavy duty massage whereas some babies will repel even light and gentle massage. Forceful massage evaporates the psychological benefits of the message to the baby.

Therefore it is important to be observant and personalize the massage techniques according to the endurance and liking of the baby. The wrong massage oil can cause skin disorders like redness, rashes, boils, etc. on the vulnerable skin of the baby.

Oil should be allowed to rest on the skin of the infant for a minimum duration of 5-10 min. it should not wash away immediately. Otherwise, the real benefits of massage oil also will be washed away! It is advisable that babies never bathe without oil massage as oil prevent severe temperature fluctuations in the infant’s body.

newborn baby massage

Most parents use general soaps available in the market. If possible avoid as they can wash away natural oils from the baby skin. In order to effectively remove the excess oil from infant’s skin, Ayurvedic Ubtan is a great option. Omved Ubtan helps to clear the pores in the skin and helps it to breathe better.

Ideally, soap should never be used on babies skin during a bath. It is like bathing the baby in acid. In case, the soap is required, for example for washing hands after eating, only very mild Ayurvedic soaps should be used.

After the bath use only chemical-free Ayurvedic lotions to replenish the moisture content of the skin. Ayurvedic lotions also protect babies skin from the germs babies are so fond of. It helps to prevent direct contact of skin with the dust, dirt, soil and what not. Also, it will help you relax as your child plays freely in the sand.

It is extremely important to avoid powdering baby after massage and bath. Baby talcs are known to cause an allergic response in the infant’s skin. Also, baby talc is a fine powder. The fine powder of the talc stick to the infant skin and block the sweat glands and other skin-based glands. This might cause pimples, rashes and other skin disorders.

How to stop baby crying from Colic, Cold & Cough?

Understanding Dosha in new born baby

Each phase of the life of an individual is divided into 3 natural phases – childhood, youth and old age. According to Ayurveda, each of these 3 phases is dominated by one of the 3 Dosha’s. Let’s imagine this concept as if there are 3 drivers for a vehicle, but only one can drive at a time. During childhood, Kapha is the dominating factor, during youth Pitta drives the body metabolism and during the old age, Vata governs our physiology.

This is the reason why children are more prone to Kapha related disorders like a common cold, congestion, stuffy nose, etc. than any other age group. Most of these disorders get cured on their own as the child become adults and Pitta, the fiery dosha takes charge.

Pitta eliminates the cold and congestion causing effect of Kapha. However, the sad marks of Kapha imbalance are left on the metabolism of the child forever. If Kapha imbalance is not corrected at an early age, it might lead to severe life-long disorders like sinusitis, migraine, problems in sensory organs like eyes, ears, etc.

However, curing Kapha disorders in children, esp. babies becomes difficult just for the simple reason of their free-spiritedness. Children are not known to be the docile beings who will take a spoonful of medicine at a single command. And we all have known parents who keep running after them with food and medicines.

Unfortunately, we have become so used to quick-fix cures that the moment babies develop cold, cough or congestion, we rush to the doctors. Modern medicine has its limitations. The only way most of the doctors try to cure their patients is to put them on nebulizers or administer antibiotics to little kids.

Antibiotics can be a major health hazard in the coming future.  Because of careless overuse of antibiotics in humans, most of the pathogens have adapted themselves to these drugs. This is a more dangerous new breed of drug-resistant pathogens, which cannot be eliminated by the traditional use of antibiotics.

For example, a new variant of tuberculosis bacteria is resistant to most of the prevalent antibiotics. Now doctors have to administer a much higher dose of antibiotics as compared to earlier dosage, that too without much effect.

With antibiotics, we are sitting on a ticking time bomb! Besides, antibiotics cause a lot of damage to the cells of the body and retard the rate of growth in the child. It is always better to try a natural solution before resorting to antibiotics.

Nebulizers also are not completely innocent. Albuterol drops, the most established decongestant used in nebulizers, has its own side effects on the sensitive respiratory system of the baby. Albuterol has a hoard of possible side effects like nausea, headache, vomiting, cough, throat irritation and muscle pain. The worst thing is that the baby won’t be able to convey that he is suffering from any of these!

Albuterol also leads to over-stimulation of the body metabolism and possible weight loss. Frequent use of nebulizers can be completely contrary to the baby’s growth objectives.

So, What is the solution for a baby’s crying and worried parents ?. There are natural options available for Baby care.

Besides, natural health solution not only cure congestive disorders, colic, cold, cough, etc. They can also help to prevent them. So the baby doesn’t have to fall sick at all keep staying healthy and happy! One of these solutions is the baby bib.

Baby bib is a completely natural solution derived from the ancient art of bringing up healthy and happy kids naturally. It is a one-stop solution for multiple baby problems. Here are some of the ways it can be used for various disorders in babies.

Congestion one of the main concerns

bib for babies cold and cough

Congestion is the worst problem that a baby can face. In a congested respiratory pathway, the mucus gets drier and stiffer. Therefore, the natural de-congesting system of the respiratory pathway – the villi, is not able to remove it. Here, there is a combined effect of deranged Vata and Kapha.

Kapha increases the density of the mucus and Vata dries it up. Both Vata and Kapha have the quality of being cold in temperament. And therefore, there is only one way to remove the effect of both kapha and vata – to heat the chest up.

It is conventional practice to apply a warm compress to the baby’s chest, in order to de-solidify the stuck mucus and help it to get drained through the respiratory pathway. But the effect of warmth can be enhanced by the aroma and touch of some vata and kapha pacifying herbs.

Baby bib contains Ajwain and flaxseeds. Both the herbs have a balancing effect on both vata and kapha. This helps to enhance the effect of warmth provided by the baby bib. The strong aroma of ajwain and flaxseed produce an effect equivalent to a nebulizer and help to decongest the respiratory pathways. Besides, the baby immediately feels a soothing motherly touch by the warm baby bib!

Stuffy nose a common problem with new born

Ajwain is a well known decongestant in Ayurveda. It is very frequently used in kapha and vata disorders due to its warm and sharp action. Fumes from the heated baby bib help to dilate the blood vessels of the nasal passage and helps to increase the heat available to the inner nasal lining. Thus the mucus melts like the way butter melts on a heated pan.

As no part in the face should be heated directly according to Ayurveda, except the forehead, baby bib provides additional heat to the chest region, which gets safely transferred to the nasal lining and accelerate the process of de-congestion.

It is important that one nasal opening is opened at a time. Baby bib works faster to de-congest a stuffy nose if the baby is tilted in one direction at one time.

The right side of the nostril is considered to be a stimulator of Suryanadi (surya means sun), which is supposed to stimulate the metabolism and increase the production of heat in the body. Therefore, if both the nasal openings are congested at the same time, you should apply the baby bib and turn the baby towards its left so that the right nostril is on the upper side.

Right nostril will open faster than the left one (Chandra Nadi). This is s because breathing through the left nostril stimulates the parasympathetic system and reduces the rate of metabolism, and thus the rate of heat production as well.

Thus, the baby bib can provide relief from the stuffy nose without side effects of harmful chemicals.

Common cold & cough

treat cough in baby

Common cold happens when Kapha gets increased beyond its natural limits and it encroaches the metabolic boundary of vata and pitta. Sometimes, when vata and pitta are also vitiated, there are complicated symptoms like congestion, problem in breathing, throat pain, and fever. For the chronic or complicated common cold, it is best to consult a qualified Ayurveda physician.

In case, there is no congestion or stuffy nose, the baby bib can help to accelerate the rate of recovery from a common cold. It can also help to prevent the aggravation and complications of the common cold. It is old sayings “feed a cold and starve a fever”. It is true because more food intake increases heat production in the body and helps to alleviate the common cold.

But this experiment can go wrong if the baby is suffering from indigestion. More food will tax the digestive system of the baby and produce disease aggravating factors. Use of baby bib here will produce the most crucial effect of heating up the chest region without any extra burden on the metabolism. This helps to reduce the effect of cold and accurate recovery.

Cough: Cough occurs in order to clear obstructions and irritants from the breathing pathway and enable smooth breathing.

Common cold causes a lot of mucus that gets stuck in the respiratory pathway. This mucus might occasionally drip inside the windpipe. In order to remove this mucus, the baby coughs. This might also lead to a coughing spell if there is a lot of undrained mucus in the naso-phryngeal passage and sinuses.

Cough can be the most irritating kapha disorder for a baby. It normally occurs after the common cold and most of its symptoms have subsided. The most problematic aspect of cough is that it might take a longer time to gets cured completely. Sometimes the baby might not be able to sleep properly because of spells of cough.

Choose Omved Baby Bib

baby bib compress

Baby bib safely warms the chest of the baby. This warmth gets transferred to the regions above the chest and lead to gradual drainage of mucus into the alimentary canal for final disposal. If the Baby bib is applied from the very onset of the cold, it can help to prevent the resulting cough completely, as it will ensure unhindered and constant removal of excess mucus. Thus there will not no build-up of cough-causing mucus at all.

In case, the baby has already developed a lot of congestion and cough or if it is suffering from chronic cough, regular use of Baby bib is extremely useful

Note: It is important to remember that natural and Ayurvedic remedies are no quick-fixes. They take their own sweet time to produce ever-lasting results. If your baby has a cold, cough or severe congestion, you must use baby bib periodically in order to see real-time improvement. Using it for stomach ache or any disorder will not produce an immediate effect.

Therefore in case of severe cold, cough, congestion and all Kapha related problems, you must apply baby bib continuously. And continuously means continuously. It might mean heating the bib to a mildly warm temperature and applying it 15-20 times in one hour and to continue the process for 60-90 min at a time.

But this hard work will protect your baby from the harmful effects of chemical based medicines. So I must say that it is completely worth doing.

All the above problems were Kapha dominant problems. Baby bib can help you solve a lot of vata related problems as well.

Stomach ache or colic – Most, unfortunately, babies are not able to articulate there problem. So when a baby cries, it can be a stomach ache, congestion, stuffy nose or even simple hunger or thirst. I remember once when I was a baby, I cried for quite some time before someone reminded my mom that I might be thirsty, and I was. Now, when a baby is well fed with food and water, it becomes difficult to diagnose the real cause of crying. However, most of the time it is pain, and pain is the defining factor for a Vata disorder. External warmth is an easiest, safest and most direct resistance to the increased Vata. Here, baby bib comes into the picture.

One tsp ajwain with a pinch of black salt is the most common remedy for any kind of stomach ache. But we cannot feed it to a baby. Besides, baby’s digestive system does not need such a heavy dose of herbs most of the time.  Here, baby bib not only provides controlled external warmth to the baby’s stomach but also the Vata diminishing effect of ajwain and flaxseed to the stomach in a hassle-free manner.

It is important to monitor the mother’s food if the baby is suffering from terrible colic.

Following food are strict No for feeding mother for at least 6 months in order to prevent colic in the breastfed babies.

  1. Alcohol (any kind)
  2. Brinjal//Eggplant
  3. Cabbage
  4. Cauliflower
  5. Lettuce
  6. Broccoli
  7. Green Peas
  8. Green vegetables like spinach, amaranth, dill etc.
  9. Tamarind
  10. Vinegar
  11. Soya sauce
  12. Acidic/ sour food
  13. Too salty food
  14. Junk food

Apart from the above list, the mother should not eat anything she despises.

  • She should have simple, less spicy food.
  • She should have lots of milk and other natural calcium supplements like ragi, jowar, banana, dry fruits like almonds, cashew etc.
  • The family must ensure that the breastfeeding mother is healthy and happy.
  • She should do mild exercise and enjoy a warm massage every day for at least 3 months in order to get back in shape.

In the case of severe bloating, stomach-pain or any disorder related to digestion, add a pinch of roasted asafoetida in mother’s milk or normal A2 cow milk and feed it to the baby.

You can mix a little amount of organic brown sugar in order to make it more palatable. Also, rub a small amount of this milk(without sugar) on the tips of the toes and on the naval. Wash off with warm water after 30 min. After that, apply warm baby bib for 30-60 min continuously for complete relief.

Vomiting: Normally, babies do not have a very good reflex for burping after food. Therefore, generally, the gas gets stuck in their alimentary canal after feeding. Unfortunately, this gas comes out by pushing the food also outside along with it. That’s why it is advised to burp the babies before lying them back after feeding.

If the gas is not removed via a proper burp, it might result in vomiting and all the dearly fed food with be out of the baby’s stomach. Babies who vomit frequently lose their natural appetite and tend to grow at a slow rate. They might also turn more cranky. Therefore, it is imperative to have a good baby burp after feeding!

However, many babies take a long time to burp after feeding. It might take awfully, for example anywhere from 5 min to 30 mins for a baby to have a proper burp. The baby bib can help to save this time for the busy parent. Apply a mildly warm baby bib on the chest of the baby and carry him on your bent on your shoulders for some time. It can also be applied on the stomach is the baby is prone to frequent cramps after the digestion of the food.

The warmth from Baby bib will help the gas to move up fast and get expelled from the mouth. It will also help to maintain the optimal digestive temperature and thus accelerate the rate of digestion. And as good digestion is the key to a great hunger and thereby the excellent rate of physical and mental growth, the Baby bib is one of the must-have product for all homes with babies.

OMVED Baby bib is made from 100% cotton, easy to clean, wash, made from cotton available online on cash on delivery.

4 Proven Benefits of Massaging Your Newborn Baby

Did you know – the Sanskrit word ‘sneha’ means both “oil” and “love” underlining the subliminal nourishing effect that oil massage has on our bodies, minds, and spirits.

Ayurveda, the oldest living healing science in the world, says that a daily oil massage is perhaps the simplest and most loving gift you can give yourself – and your child.

Massaging your newborn baby plays an important role in their overall development, read on to know more about the benefits.

Newborn Baby Massage Oil

Oils of coconut, sesame, mustard and olive are preferred for baby massages. Ensure the oil you use is 100% plant-based and does not contain mineral oils or synthetic fragrances, as these are petroleum-based and contain toxic contaminants.

Herbal oils made according to ancient Ayurvedic recipes and by traditional methods of steeping, blending, extended simmering and boiling, etc are the best choice since, they not only hydrate the skin but also penetrate the ‘7 layers’ of skin to nourish bones and even organs; boosting brain development, eyesight, digestion etc.

Our own AYURVEDIC BABY MASSAGE OIL covers all the bases. It is a classical Ayurvedic formulation of a pure blend of extra-virgin unrefined coconut oil, (made from coconut milk and not ‘copra’) and the most prized herbs of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia) and Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides prescribed in Ayurveda, for a growing baby.

How to Do Baby Massage

  • Ayurveda suggests massaging your newborn baby after around 4 weeks of the birth, By this time the baby has gained strength, and the navel has healed.
  • Massaging the newborn baby can be done at any time of the day, but choose not to massage the baby immediately after a feed or when the baby is hungry or distressed. Many people like to massage their baby followed by a little early morning sun and thereafter the bath and some prefer right before bedtime to lull baby to sleep.
  • Carry out massage in a warm, draught-free place, on the floor or a table, covered with a towel or blanket that can be washed easily.
  • Warm some oil either on a stove or by placing in a bowl of hot water. Note:  Microwave heating may destroy essential nutrients.
  • The palms, rather than the fingertips, should be used to ensure gentle pressure is applied, and the touch should be very light.
  • Oil your hands and gently begin by applying oil to your baby’s scalp. Continue with rhythmic stroking down the limbs, and circle around joints. Massage abdomen in a large clockwise motion. Turn your baby onto its belly, and massage using long strokes down the back, and circular strokes on the buttocks.
  • It is important to stop the massaging if the baby is not enjoying it.

Benefits of Massaging Your Baby

Massaging your newborn baby has immense benefits. Baby massage has been practiced in India for centuries, and is an integral part of every family’s routine, due to the immense physical benefits that come from the herbal Ayurvedic oil. Some of the health benefits of massaging your newborn baby include:

  • Nourishing the skin
  • Increasing the blood circulation
  • Draining toxins and improving immunity
  • Promoting sound sleep
  • Strengthening muscles and bones
  • Providing relief from wind, colic, constipation and teething discomfort
  • Aiding in digestion and bowel movements

Far outweighing even these physical benefits are the bountiful lifelong emotional benefits that come from the experience of ‘touch’ – of making the baby feel securely attached, more loved, valued and respected.

Research reveals that infants who experience routine touch show 50% more eye contact and are 3 times more likely to have an overall positive expression
than infants
who do not.

And if all of this is not enough to convince you to make this beautiful loving ritual a part of your daily routine, know this – massage activates important bonding hormones between mama and baby, promoting happiness, love and positivity in you (making you less inclined to post-natal depression)!

These little moments of love will create a bond with your baby that is going to last a lifetime. No wonder then the word sneh is used for love and oil! Do remember, a massaging is always done “with” and not “to” your baby. And of course, as a parent, be sure not to neglect your own health – don’t forget your own daily Abhyanga massage!

Skin Care in Winter – the do’s and don’ts

The winter season is marked as Hemanta Ritu in Ayurveda. Hemanta Ritu starts from mid November and ends in mid January. This falls in southern solstice which is called as visarga kala or dakshinayana in Ayurveda. Skin care in winter is one of the most important things that you should focus on.

Skin Care in Winter – the do’s and don’ts

In winter the agni or body fire (digestive power) increases with the support of vata . The increased body fire even digests heavy foods easily and quickly. When sufficient food is not available for the amplified body fire it affects the nutritive fluids of body leading to vitiation of vata. Thus the vitiated vata assigns its qualities of coldness, dryness and roughness to skin. Hence in winter a great care should be taken to protect the skin with various measures regarding diets and lifestyles.

What is a Dosha?

Ayurveda states that the human body is made up of five distinct elements present in Nature – Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether. These elements play a major role in deciding your body’s constitution, also known as Prakriti. According to the Vedic science dating back to over 5000 years, every individual is born with a unique Prakriti, which is determined by the three Doshas called – Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

What is your skin type? What is your Dosha? Click to take Omved’s Dosha Quiz now.

Though every element is present in the human body, each Dosha is essentially the combination of two predominant elements. Vata is a combination of Ether and Air, Pitta is a combination of Fire and Water, whereas Kapha is a combination of Water and Earth.

Skin Care in Winter – What should you eat?

  • Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated.
  • Drinking warm water in winter prevents vitiation of vata and diseases which arise from vata.
  • Soups that are sour and salted help to balance vata.
  • Avoid consumption of junk foods, too much of sweets and oil food as these lead to weight gain.
  • Stay away from cold and refrigerated foods because they vitiate vata.
  • Opt for warm and heavy food to fulfill the requirement of increased body fire.

Skin Care in Winter – What should your lifestyle be?

  • Always wear warm clothes.
  • When you are wearing clothes in layers wear cotton clothes next to your skin as they do not cause skin allergy. Cotton clothes help to absorb sweat whereas synthetic clothes do not. Unabsorbed sweat harbors microorganisms which cause skin infections.
  • Avoid long hot showers and bath. Quick three minutes bath is advisable.
  • 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week can give your skin a healthy glow.
  • Avoid repeated washing of face. This washes off natural oils from your skin and makes the skin dry, scaly and wrinkled. Opt for a gentle soap free facewash that will help cleanse the skin gently without disturbing its ph balance.
  • Always wash your face with a lukewarm water.
  • In the mornings use a gentle moisturizer to keep your skin nourished. At nights, use a thicker cream that will work on keeping your skin soft and supple as you sleep.
  • Use an indoor humidifier to place moisture in the air.

Skin care accessories for winter

  • Massage your body with oils infused with vata balancing herbs. Try any of out cold pressed massage oils that can provide adequate nourishment to your body. We have pure oils of almonds, castor, coconut and sesame that can hydrate your body in this season.
  • Apply moisturizing lotion liberally all over the body. Apply a lip balm to prevent chapping of lips and to keep them moisturized.
  • Take care of your skin on heels with balms and moisturizing products. You can also use the bronze foot massager when you massage your feet to release the toxins from your body. Plus a foot massage helps to relax after a long and hectic day.

Following these easy tips for skin care in winter will help you keep your mind, body and soul in perfect harmony this season.
