Scrubs are a good way to slough the dead skin away by a combination of cleansing, exfoliating and massaging. These three actions combined with the essential oils and the basic oils used in a scrub not just exfoliate the dead skin but also provide adequate relief to the tired skin. When you rub the scrub on your body, it helps to boost the circulation and increases the blood flow to the skin’s surface. It helps to deep cleanse and protect your skin completely.
How does a scrub help?
When used regularly, a scrub has many healing and cleansing properties. It is advised not to use a scrub on a daily basis as it sap the body of the natural oils. A body scrub should not be used more than twice a week for best results. A body scrub can have larger exfoliating particles because the skin on the body is not as delicate in comparison to the skin on your face. Salts, sugars, honey, fruit juices, spices, oatmeal, peels, oils and essential oil make up for a larger part of a body scrub.

Having said that, we have listed a few easy to make DIY scrubs that can be made in a few minutes and these will leave your skin looking soft, supple and smooth for days together.
1. The Basic Sugar Scrub
Mix together a teaspoon of white sugar and brown sugar. Always use sugar that has smaller granules as these do not harm the skin when you use it as a scrub. Bigger granules are likely to cause abrasions. Add a teaspoon of pure coconut oil to this mix and a drop lavender essential oil. Mix this thoroughly and use as a body scrub. Wash off with warm water to get rid of the excess oils. You won’t need a moisturizer post this scrub because the coconut oil acts as a moisturizer. The calming properties of lavender will relax and rejuvenate your senses.
2. The Simple Oatmeal Scrub
This is one of the most simplest recipes and you can have the scrub ready in a jiffy! Mix together 3 tbsps of oatmeal powder with 3 tsps of organic rose water and the juice of half a lime. Add a drop of peppermint essential oil and use this a cooling scrub. You can wash off the scrub with cool water because there is no oil in the scrub. This is a perfect summer scrub that cools your body after an long and exhausting day. The oatmeal exfoliates the skin gently while the peppermint oil in the scrub refreshes the skin and adds a cooling effect.
3. The Sugar and Oatmeal Scrub
Combine together 2 tbsp of white sugar or brown sugar with oatmeal powder. Add 3 tbsps of olive oil to this to this mix and 2 drops of your favourite essential oil. You can store this scrub in a mason jar for at least 2 weeks.
How to Use a Body Scrub
It is advised not to use a shower scrub more than twice a week. If you have sensitive skin, use a scrub not more than once a week. Use dry hands to scoop out the scrub of you have made it in larger quantities and using either a scrubbing tool or your hands massage the scrub all over your body in circular motions. Massage it for not more than 2-3 minutes and let it stay on your body for a few minutes. Wash off with warm water to get rid of the excess oils. If you have dry skin consider moisturizing your skin post a scrub to keep it hydrated.
Sometimes its good to chuck that bar of soap and indulge in natural cleaning! Making a scrub is one of the easiest things to do and the best part of making your own scrub is that you are aware of the ingredients you have used.
