Eating healthy is a practice that you should follow all year around, not just any particular season. The food options in the winter are lesser in comparison to the other seasons, but the options are good enough to provide the required nourishment that you may need for the cold season. Winter is also associated with the qualities of ‘Vata dosha’, which are cold, air, dry and light. If you need to keep the dosha balanced in the season you need to opt for foods that are warm, moist, heavy and oily. It is also advised to opt for activities like going for a run, jog, walking or yoga that will keep your body warm.
Foods that you need to opt for this season are:
Cabbages: Cabbages are one of the must-have vegetables of this season. Did you know that cabbages are loaded with vitamins and minerals (Vitamins C and K and folate). It is also rich in fiber content and antioxidants. Some studies claim that the spherical vegetable can even reduce cholesterol and lower risk of cancer and diabetes as well. You can include the cabbage as a quick stir fry veggie or add a few hand torn leaves to a salad to make it nice and crunchy.
Potatoes: Potatoes are a staple food for many cuisines world-wide. Potatoes are starchy and known to be a filling vegetable for a meal. It is also known to lower the blood pressure levels and are high on antioxidants. Opt for a classic baked potato with a dash of olive oil, salt and herbs. These make a far healthier choice in comparison to the deep fried or mixed with cheese and butter potato variants.
Beetroots: This nutritious vegetable bulb is packed with antioxidants called betalains that can help fight cancer and other degenerative diseases. Rich in Vitamins A, B, C and also potassium, betroots are known to have a sweet taste because they are also a natural source of sugar. Include this in your diet of you have a sugar craving. The best way to eat this veggie is to toss small cubes of it in a salad or make a warm side dish by mixing it with other veggies with salt and some fresh herbs.
Carrots: Yes, we have grown up knowing that carrots are healthy for the eyes. This vegetable is packed with antioxidant beta-carotene, a compound that converts to vitamin A in the body to makes our immune system really strong and promotes healthy eyes and skin. Also rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, carrots are known to prevent cardio vascular disease and reduce the risk of cancer. Citrus fruits: Citrus fruits like oranges and sweet lemons are the perfect snack options in the winter. They are a great source of Vitamin C that not just help build up your immunity but also keep the common cold and flu at bay. These fruits are also rich in fiber that helps keep the digestive systems clean and fiber is known to help stabilize blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Eating this as a snack can also curb your hunger levels.
Include spices like cinnamon and cloves in your food because they add spice and warmth to almost any recipe ranging from your regularly cooked lentils to a mug of hot chocolate. For the winter opt for a food diet that includes soups, stews, warm salads, boiled or steamed vegetables and warm herbal teas.
