Did you know that some of the exposures that we have in our day-to-day life can pose as a hazard to our health? Did you know that an average home contains 62 toxic chemicals? Since we spend a major part of our time at home these chemicals can get into our body through inhalation, ingestion and absorption. There are safer alternatives for the toxic products that we use in our homes. We’ve listed some simple solutions to replace them.
Say bye to ammonia
Ammonia can burn your skin and cause irritation to the respiratory tract and the eyes. Instead of using ammonia based cleansers, make your own cleanser at home.
We say: Mix equal amounts of vinegar and water. Shake well and store it in a spray bottle. Squirt it on the window and wipe with paper for sparking results.
Free yourself from toxic formaldehyde exposure
An exposure to formaldehyde can cause respiratory problems and insomnia, among other symptoms. Opt for organic and untreated 100% bleach free herbal dyed cotton sheets. Ensure that you vacuum and turn your mattress regularly to get rid of dead skin, bed bugs, fungal spores and dust-mites that can cause a lot of skin problems. Replace toxic mothballs.
Get rid of the poisonous detergents
Did you know that detergents are a petrochemical-based product? The normal bleach contains Chlorine, some spray polishes can contain volatile toxins and most of the cleaning products that we use can have dangerous toxic solvents, carcinogenic detergents etc.
We say: Replace your detergents with herbal washing powder that have the power of areetha, shikakai, lemon etc, that are made from natural herbs, oils and minerals and are safe to use.
Say no to plastic bottles
Did you know that most clear polycarbonate plastic bottles that are used to store water is leaching toxins into your water? Bisphenol-A or BPA is a potent hormone disruptor. It is known to not only impair the reproductive organs but also have adverse effects on breast tissue and prostate development.
We say:Store drinking water in copper or terracotta pots. Use glass bottles for storage.
Most food sold is sprayed heavily with pesticides and wax is used on fruits to give it the shine. Before consuming vegetables and fruits, wash them thoroughly and soak them in salt water for at least 15 minutes to get rid of the surface chemicals. Staphylococcal infections and food poisoning can easily enter the home via unwashed fruit and vegetables.
We say:Opt for pesticide-free organically grown food and seasonal and local fruits and vegetables because it won’t need too many preservatives to grow.
Wash away petrochemical perfumes
Did you know that most commercial bath products contain detergent or foaming gents and artificial fragrances that not only irritate our sensitive skin but can also be carcinogenic? Ingredients like sodium Lauryl sulphate (SLS) is known to weaken the human skin and allows more toxins to be absorbed by the body. Opt for safer and natural herbal alternatives.
Reduce carbon dioxide and air pollutants
Did you know that plants in your house can reduce the air pollutants by absorbing the carbon dioxide and releasing the oxygen?
We say: Grow indoor plants like basil (tulsi) or spider plants to reduce the air pollutants at home. These plants are known to keep the air fresh.
Avoid having any electronic equipment in your bedrooms. It is a known fact the circuitry and inks emit volatile carbon toxins into the air along with Lead, Barium, Mercury, Tin, Arsenic, Beryllium, Hexavalent Chromium, Selenium, Manganese and Silver. A television will emit EMFs (Electromagnetic Fields) and it is a known fact that the T.V screens damage melatonin levels that we require for a restful sleep.
Use herbal options for repellents
Mothballs are made from 100% paradichlorobenzene. This is known to be a volatile toxic chemical that can cause severe headaches and throat, lung and nose irritations. Prolonged exposure can cause substantial damage to the kidney and liver.
We say:Replace mothballs with natural repellent herbal sachets. Use diffusers with essential oils to keep your home free from other insects.
