Summers in India coincide with holidays and it is but natural for the family or individuals to plan short and long trips to various places. Even when not on a holiday, the basic travelling in and around can cause a lot of skin damage because of the harsh sun rays. Wrinkles, dark spots, pigmentation, sun spots, dark spots and discolouration of the skin woes that summer brings with it.
However, it is important that you start looking after your skin not just in the summers but all year round, so that you are blessed with healthy and glowing skin. Drink lots of water and eat right!
This is simply the rule no 1! You need to know that water is the elixir of life, a fact that we’re the most aware of during hot, humid summers. Dehydration can cause your skin to look sallow and pulled down. Dehydration is a real danger in this season as it can also affect your health. Ensure that you keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water and fresh fruit juices. You should also include fruits and vegetables that are high in water content so that it keeps you hydrated. Eating them raw, as in salads, has more benefits for the skin as it provides a cooling effect as well as loads of antioxidants. Avoid processed foods and saturated fat.
Avoid the sun if you can
It is important that you stay indoors in the peak hours of the sun’s rays that falls between 10 AM to 4 PM. During these hours, the sun’s rays are at their hottest and as a result the most damaging. Try to limit sun exposure during this time and plan your outdoor activities accordingly. If you do have to step out at these times, ensure that you wear a scarf or a wide brimmed hat to protect your skin.
You don’t need to use a sunscreen just in the summers to beat the heat, but you need to use it all year round to protect your skin from the UV rays. Even if you stay at home, wear a sunscreen with SPF appropriate for you, going for natural brands as much as you can. Remember that sunscreen needs to be applied at least 30 minutes before leaving the house and then re-applied every few hours. A swim will also require re-application. And yes, don’t forget your lips – choose a lip balm with SPF.
Treat sunburns immediately
the harsh heat can often cause a sun burn if you are exposed to the sunlight for a longer duration. In case you do get sun burnt, apply a soothing lotion to the affected area immediately. A single instance of sunburn can double your risk of getting melanoma, so it needs to get checked by a doctor as well.
Natural fabrics work best in summer, allowing your skin to breathe and stay healthy and cool. Go for lighter colors that reflect sun light away from the body. Choose a wide brimmed hat that will protect your hair as well as your face. Wearing oversized sunglasses will not just ensure that you are in vogue; it’ll also protect your eyes and the surrounding facial skin.
