Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22nd in the year 1970. Today, 44 years later, the purpose of Earth Day remains the same as it was started. It is celebrated to encourage social and political action by drawing attention to the cause that is happening around us. Every year, around the world, the damaged state of the environment and our planet comes to the forefront. On this day millions of people worldwide pitch in and take the opportunity to do something good for the earth; even if it is just for a single day.

However, there is a lot more that you can do to ensure you leave the planet a cleaner and a greener place, not just once a year, but all year around. Being conscious about your surroundings is the first step of being aware of the environment and all that you can do to make it a better place. We’ve listed four steps for you to follow that can help you make a cleaner and greener environment.

Plant Trees and Flowers

It is a known fact that planting trees can help not only reduce the greenhouse gas emissions, but also clean the environment and reduce the pollution levels. Planting trees helps to secure the soil in place and prevent the occurrence of soil erosions. Trees also become the natural habitat to a lot of birds by providing them the required shelter. When you are planting a tree ensure that you plant one that can survive the climate. Do check with the local nurseries about the right kind of tree to plant. If you are staying a gated community, plant trees around the societies. You can also choose to plant wildflowers that are native to your surroundings. Plant the trees and flowers in your garden or in places where they can grow undisturbed.

Care for the birds

You can set up a bird feeder or build a birdhouse in your garden or terrace to encourage the local bird population, which plays an important role in every ecosystem. Small gestures like these also ensure that you are doing your bit to save the birds and provide shelter and food to them in the changing seasons.

Segregate waste and follow the three R’s

This is one of the most common things that one can follow – segregate between the wet and the dry waste. Did you know that you can use wet waste to make your own compost? You can use it in the garden for your plants. The dry waste contributes to landfill. Take this opportunity to also follow the three R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle. Ensure that you buy as little as possible and only those products that you really need. Buy local produce and support the local farmers instead of shopping at a plush supermarket. Carry your own water bottle so that you do not need to buy bottled drinking water. Carry your own cloth bags so that you can avoid using the plastic bags the supermarket provides. And if you do take the plastic bags, recycle them!

Go Green

This is one of the easiest ways to live a sustainable and a good life. Avoid using products that are laden with chemicals and preservatives. Use natural products that are made with organic ingredients. Use organic cleaning solutions for your home instead of the chemical alternatives. Did you know that lemons and vinegar make excellent cleaning agents to clean your kitchen and window panes? Try making a simple mix by missing lemon juice and vinegar with water to make your own cleaning spritz. Add a drop of citronella essential oil to the mix and you will also disinfect the place you are cleaning. It is important to spread the word and let people around you know the importance of Earth Day. In fact, you don’t need to celebrate it just once a year to promote a better environment, following these simple steps on a daily basis will ensure that you are leaving the earth a cleaner and a greener place.
