Ayurveda or the science of life is the oldest living system of medicine that uses the inherent principles of nature to keep a person healthy.Ayurveda originated in India thousands of years ago. The term Ayurveda is derived from two Sanskrit words ‘ayu’ meaning life and ‘veda’ meaning knowledge or science. Ayurveda is based on elemental principles that pertain to life on earth.
The basic premise of Ayurveda is that everything within the universe, including us, is composed of the panchamahabhoot – five elements: ether, air, fire, water and earth.stablishes the five great elements as the building blocks of the natural world. These five elements pair-up in three combinations to form the primary forces of nature called doshas.
- Ether Air = vata dosha relates to the energy of movement
- Fire Water = pitta dosha relates to the energy of digestion and metabolism
- Water Earth = kapha dosha relates to the energy of structure and lubrication.
These five elements are rarely independent of one or another and are often found in certain combinations or groups. Ayurveda refers to these combinations as the three doshas (literally means impurity, as in two elements mixed together). The elements group together to form three basic doshas or different basic types of human constitution:
Ayurvedic philosophy declares that each of us are born with a unique combination of the doshas that result in our prakriti (ideal state), or constitutional nature. Our prakriti is fixed throughout our lifetime, but can go out of balance, as it is influenced by the time of day, the season, our diet, environmental conditions, and our place in the cycle of our life. This imbalance is our current doshic state or vikriti (present state).So for eg your true natural dosha might be pitta but currently you might belong to the vata group due to imbalance.
The human system maintains a delicate balance or homeostasis, with its dynamic elemental composition always on the verge of disorder. Ayurveda teaches that in a state of doshic harmony we experience true health and happiness while disease is the result of dosha imbalance. This unique pattern of Dosha energy can be easily imbalanced by a wide variety of factors, both internal and external. Emotions, stress, diet, trauma, the seasons, weather, relationships and work can all disturb the balance. Thus by comparing our present state (vikruti) with our ideal (prakruti), we can see which doshas are out of balance (in excess). We can never be below the levels we were born with, imbalance is only in excess.
If you know your type, your dominant dosha, you can adjust your life style and routine, as well as diet, more accurately and in a more customized way. Specific customized therapies, lifestyle regimes and products can be tailored for the individual to promote good health, balance and well-being.
Ayurveda emphasizes prevention and health maintenance with the knowledge of using foods, herbs, oils, gems, metals, colors, yoga asanas and meditation. Balance and order can bring about greater health. Acknowledge your original and unique nature, and walk your individual and perfect path to bliss.
